Ultrasound Scans
What is an ultrasound scan
An ultrasound scan is a way to detect pregnancy using sound waves to create images of the offspring. External ultrasounds are safe and painless for both mother and offspring. They can be used to confirm pregnancy, estimate offspring numbers, estimate due dates and measure the gestational age of the offspring.
How we scan
We have a portable machine that we will set up, this may require the use of a plug socket. We prefer your pet to be laying on its back, once settled we will apply ultrasound gel to the belly and use our probe to allow us to view the offspring. For nervous or wriggly animals we may have to adapt our method. Our goal is to do the scan with minimal stress to the mother so we will adapt to the animal this may take longer than usual in some cases. You are welcome to take photos and videos of the scan while we do it.
When to scan
The first ultrasound scan is done at 4 weeks from the last mating. At this scan you will see sacs, we can provide estimate due dates, estimate numbers and check development.
The second ultrasound scan is done between 6 and 7 weeks into the gestational period. At this scan you will see bone development, heartbeats and movement from the offspring. we can also provide estimate due dates, estimate numbers and check development.
